Yes, there is another type of prescription called “acute prescription”; for short-term or temporary conditions, or for medicines requiring frequent review. It is not intended for long-term use. Examples include antibiotics and painkillers.

GP will simply not issue it just because it is on your repeat. Someone needs to “initiate” the order whenever you need your medication. A new legal prescription is signed by the doctor which is then dispensed by the pharmacy.

You can physically drop off a repeat order form, call your pharmacy, use apps like the NHS App or Patient Access, or let the pharmacy manage it for you. Remember, most surgeries can't take prescription orders over the phone unless it's an exceptional circumstance.

It's recommended to order when you have about 5 days of medication left, allowing for processing time at the surgery and pharmacy, with an extra day as a margin.

Repeat prescriptions are typically issued for one month, but durations can vary, helping minimize wastage and allowing adjustments if needed.
